Cleaning a denim upper

  1. Dry brush first

Use a soft brush to lift dust and dried mud while dry. Wet dirt sinks into the weave.

  2. Spot clean, do not soak

Dip the brush in a mild cleaning solution, work small areas, and blot with a microfiber cloth. Test on a hidden spot first.

  3. Clean the leather and midsole separately

Use a firmer brush on rubber and leather parts, keeping the suds off the denim.

  4. Air dry

Stuff with paper and dry at room temperature, out of direct sun. Nike warns dryer heat can damage shoes.

Questions people ask

Do denim Dunks fade?

Indigo dyed textiles can lose dye when wet or scrubbed hard, and can transfer color to light fabrics at first. Clean gently and test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Can I wear denim Dunks with jeans?

Yes. Pick jeans a clearly different wash from the shoe (black or light grey with a mid blue shoe, for example) so the outfit does not blur into one block of blue.

How do I clean denim Dunks?

Brush off dry dirt, then dab with a mild cleaning solution and a soft brush, wipe with a damp cloth and air dry. Nike says cotton and canvas sneakers are generally safe to hand wash with a mild solution, and advises against the washing machine.
